Prof. Mervyn E. King

Advisory Board Member

Prof. Mervyn King is Chairman of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), Chairman Emeritus of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and a member of the Private Sector Advisory Group to the World Bank on Corporate Governance. He is Professor Extraordinaire at the University of South Africa on Corporate Citizenship, Honorary Professor at the University of Pretoria and Visiting Professor at Rhodes University.   He is also a senior Counsel and former Judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa.

Prof. King is Chairman of the King Committee on Corporate Governance in South Africa, which has produced the ‘King Reports’ on corporate governance, focusing on how organisations can better meet the needs, interests and expectations of all stakeholders and setting the bar of corporate governance internationally.  He chaired the United Nations Committee on Governance and Oversight and was President of the Advertising Standards Authority for 15 years. He has consulted, advised and spoken on legal, sustainability and corporate governance issues in more than 50 countries.

Prof. King is a distinguished alumnus of The University of the Witwatersrand, where he was conferred with honorary degree in Doctor of Laws in 2009.  He is the recipient of numerous awards including Green Globe Award for Sustainability (2010), Honorary membership of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (2011), Gold Service Award for his worldwide contribution the the accountancy profession (IFAC, 2011) and Honorary membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (2014).

Prof. King is known as Nelson Mandela’s favourite judge.

Prof. King conceptualised and raised the funds for the ridge trail stretching some 8kms from Hillbrow in Johannesburg to Gillooly’s Farm in Bedfordview, which the Johannesburg City Council named the Mervyn King Ridge Trail in 1984.
