Collective Action for Anti-Corruption

Argüden Governance Academy is organizing a series of "A Decade on the Journey towards Governance Excellence" conferences to commemorate its 10th anniversary. On May 10th, 2024, the Academy cooperated with the Global Compact Network Türkiye to organize a conference hosted by TÜSİAD to address the "UN Global Compact Principle 10: Anti-Corruption." The conference started with a video message from Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, the architect of the 10th Principle.  Cristina Ritter, Head of UN Global Compact Governance and Anti-Corruption Division, was the guest of honor.

"A Decade on the Journey towards Governance Excellence" conference, organized by Argüden Governance Academy in cooperation with UN Global Compact. The Conference that addressed the UN Global Compact’s Principle 10: Anti-Corruption was hosted by TÜSİAD on May 10th, 2024.

Cristina Ritter, Head of Governance and Anti-Corruption at UN Global Compact was the guest of honor of the Conference where Dr. Yılmaz Argüden, Chairman of ARGE Consulting and Chairman of the Trustees of Argüden Governance Academy and Ahmet Cemal Dördüncü, Chairman of UN Global Compact Türkiye, delivered the opening speeches.

Dr. Argüden stated that: “Corruption is a major obstacle to sustainable development. It is vital for the companies committed to good governance and sustainable success, to adopt the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact and align all their strategies and operations with these universal principles. UN Convention Against Corruption, forms the basis of the 10th principle of UN Global Compact.”

Ahmet Dördüncü, stated that: “Investor, customer, and the public trust in organizations is the key to their sustainability. Good governance is the antidote of corruption and the recipe for organizations to build trust with their stakeholders. I would like to congratulate the 10th anniversary of the Argüden Governance Academy, who is making significant contributions to the development of a culture of good governance in our country and to international developments on good governance, such as the UN Global Compact's Transformational Governance Self-Assessment Tool. I wish them continued success in their endeavors.”

Cristina Ritter, UN Global Compact Chair for Governance and Anti-Corruption, stated that: “Transformational governance is the key to anti-corruption. We need to develop a comprehensive approach and integrate the concept of ethical leadership and a culture of integrity into all processes. In an ethical, transparent, and accountable environment, organizations can focus on economic development and innovation. We can make a difference with collective action against corruption.”

In the session on the importance of anti-corruption for organizations, Ana Aranha, Senior Manager of the UN Global Compact Anti-Corruption Unit, provided detailed information on collective action on Principle 10 Anti-Corruption, and Mehmet Gün, Senior Partner of Gün + Partners Law Firm, gave a presentation on anti-corruption and anti-bribery activities in the USA, OECD, Council of Europe GRECO, UK, Germany and Türkiye.

In the pursuing panel discussion moderated by Dr. Erkin Erimez, Managing Partner of ARGE Consulting, and Mehmet Gün, Senior Partner of Gün + Partners Attorneys at Law, Çağdaş Hemşinoğlu, Chief Legal Counsel for Türkiye and the Middle East at Unilever, Rana Hoffman, Deputy Chief Legal and Compliance Counsel at Koç Holding, and Dr. Yılmaz Argüden, Chairman of ARGE Consulting took part as speakers. The session, which included international examples of anti-corruption efforts, emphasized that corruption can be prevented not only through anti-corruption measures, but also by changing the culture of institutions.

About UN Global Compact Principle 10

The UN Global Compact includes 10 principles that address the fundamental responsibilities of business in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. By integrating these 10 Principles into their strategies, policies and procedures, companies not only meet their fundamental responsibilities to people and the planet, but also achieve long-term success.  The UN Global Compact Principles are based on universally accepted United Nations declarations on the relevant subjects. The Tenth Principle, whose 20th anniversary is this year, focuses specifically on preventing corruption.

About a Decade on the Journey towards Governance Excellence

Organized as part of the 10th anniversary of the Argüden Governance Academy, the “a Decade on the Journey towards Governance Excellence” conferences bring global issues such as artificial intelligence and anti-corruption on the agenda with various events throughout 2024. In addition, members of the Advisory Board of the Academy who are global thought leaders on good governance, such as Mervyn E. King, Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, Prof. David R. Beatty, and Paul Polman, are being hosted by the Academy with online seminars organized in cooperation with Harvard Business Review Türkiye.
